Is C and Z Purlins The Smart Way to Roof?

Are you planning to build a new shed or cabin? Are you unsure about which material would be best for you? Then you have arrived on the right site! We have everything that you should know about purlins including its making, pros, and cons.

Let’s dive right into it.

Flat steel sheets when rolled into specific shape and thickness that range between 1mm to 3mm are called Purlins. In the construction industry, purlins are used to build roofs and support the deck. Purlins are also known as rolled-form or cold-form steel. High quality tensile galvanized steel is used to make purlins.

Why should galvanized steel matter to you?

Galvanized steel is a result of steel dipped in a liquid Zinc coating that keeps the material from rusting. This makes the purlins more durable, safe in the worst of rains, and easier maintenance.

Based on the shape, purlins are of two types- C and Z Purlins. The C purlins are in the shape of a ‘C’, whereas the Z shape of purlins is in the shape of a ‘Z’. Generally, C purlins are used to make the main portal frames of a purlin shed. Purlins are best suited for sheds that are less than 12 meters. But some manufacturers sell design up to 24-meter in span. But the increased length decreases the strength, making it less resistant to nasty weather.

Manufacturers have found a way to strengthen the shed, by placing two C-Sections back to back. This results in extra pieces and extra parts result in an increase in building costs. The increase in price is also due to the increase in the time it takes to put all the pieces together.

Let us now look at a few pros of Purlin.

Pros of Purlin Shed

  • Cost-effective:-As they are better suited for small sheds, the labor cost involved in manufacturing is very less.
  • Easy to install:-After purlin sheds reach the construction site, everything is bolted and screwed together. This makes it very easy to install.
  • Easy to transport:-Purlin sheets are lightweight, which means you can transport larger quantities, easily.

Two Points to keep in mind before you invest in a Purlin Shed

  • Not very robust:-Purlin sheds have to be handled with care because it is relatively thin. It can be damaged if it gets hit by heavy machinery. Getting hit by machinery might bend it, which poses a huge risk to the structural integrity of the shed.
  • Strength limitations:-As the length of purlin increases, the strength decreases. And to thicken the structure, extra bracing has to be added. This is not necessarily an efficient use of space.

We really hope this gives you a clear picture of C and Z purlins and how you can use them smartly! Like with every other thing, the purlins has its limitation. But it is important to notice which one outweighs the other.
